Understanding rectal bleeding : causes, concerns, and care 

Rectal bleeding is a problem which is even difficult and too painful to think about. People often shy away from talking about it. However, it is highly necessary to know that this can range from a very minor issue to a serious health condition. Rectal bleeding is the passing of blood from the anus which can be seen in the toilet bowel or is most commonly mixed with stool. 

The colour of the blood says a lot about the severity of the condition, such as :

  • Bright red blood : bleeding near the anus or rectum
  • Dark maroon or red blood : bleeding in the colon
  • Black stools : bleeding in the stomach or upper digestive tract

Causes of rectal bleeding :

  • hemorrhoids
  • anal fissures
  • diverticular disease
  • colorectal polyps and cancer
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • proctitis
  • gastrointestinal infections
  • Angiodysplasia

When should you visit a doctor ?

  • if you notice heavy bleeding from the anus
  • if the bleeding lasts for more than a few days
  • severe abdominal pain
  • fainting
  • rapid heartbeat
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • unexplained weight loss
  • fatigue
  • black stools

Preventive measure for rectal bleeding :

  • Follow a high fiber diet
  • Drink plenty of water
  • avoid straining during bowel movements
  • stay physically active
  • go for regular screenings 

Rectal bleeding can be caused due to some serious underlying conditions, it is essential to be aware of the signs and causes of it. It not only puts you in physical discomfort but in emotional discomfort too.
